The difference is subtle but important, and can only be accurately diagnosed by a trained clinician. Bathmophobia can be seen in both children and adults. It is also fairly common among animals, particularly household pets. If your child has a fear of stairs or slopes, keep in mind that fears are a normal part of development. Bathmophobia, as with other phobias, is generally not diagnosed in children unless it persists for more than six months. Causes Bathmophobia may be caused by a wide range of factors. A particularly common cause is an early negative experience with stairs or a steep hill. If you slipped or fell on steep stairs or watched someone else struggle with shortness of breath while climbing, you may be at a greater risk of developing bathmophobia. Particularly in children, bathmophobia can also be triggered by negotiating or even just contemplating a particularly scary looking set of stairs. One example is a child involved in a local community theater with stairs leading to the backstage costume loft. The stairs were steep and open at the back so you could see down as you climbed them, and the child could imagine slipping through them, even though she didnt ever climb them herself. Memories of those stairs played into dreams that included struggling to cross a sloped floor that would tilt to near-vertical as she neared her destination in the dreams. She continues to feel apprehension when confronted with a sloped floor or a tricky set of stairs. Understanding Dreams and REM Sleep Differential Diagnosis In addition to the above-mentioned climacophobia, bathmophobia may be related to other disorders. Acrophobia, or the fear of heights, is exceptionally common. What appears to be a fear of stairs may, in fact, be a fear of the height that the stairs achieve. Illygnophobia, or the fear of vertigo, can also cause symptoms similar to those of bathmophobia. Medical causes must also be considered. True vertigo is a medical disorder of the balance system that causes a feeling of spinning or dizziness. The term is also applied medically to similar symptoms that are not caused by a balance disorder. Both types can be worsened by even minor changes in height. By definition, a fear that is reasonable due to an existing medical condition cannot be called a phobia. If you have medical vertigo, fearing that stairs and slopes may trigger your symptoms does not mean that you also have bathmophobia. Treatment If your clinician determines that your symptoms are caused by bathmophobia, you are likely to receive cognitive-behavioral therapy  (CBT). The goal of this type of therapy is to help you replace your fearful thoughts and behaviors with more rational alternatives. You will be taught relaxation exercises to help you remain calm, and slowly introduced to the object of your fear through a process known as systematic desensitization. Although it takes time, therapy has an excellent success rate in treating this type of phobia. Choosing a therapist that you trust is an essential component in working through your fear.

Literary Assertions on Women’s Rights in the Middle East Women’s issues have permeated societies throughout the world for decades, and many authors have attempted to deal with issues such as women’s rights through their own literary works. In Egypt, one such author is Alifa Rifaat, who addresses women’s rights in general, but also more specifically challenges conventional ideas regarding a woman’s right to sexual gratification in the short story â€Å"My World of the Unknown.† Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain is another international writer whose work reflects feminist issues of India in her short story â€Å"Sultana’s Dream.† Although the two stories deal with the common issue of women’s rights, they differ greatly in their content and their style because, although both countries’ attitudes towards women are antiquated, the specific circumstances of each country and each particular concern is different, and therefore the issues must be dealt with accordingly. Rafaat’s most obvious statement in â€Å"My World of the Unknown† is a call for the sexual empowerment of women. At this time, Egyptian women are not expected, or even allowed, to enjoy sexual encounters. Sex is a practice to bring pleasure to a woman’s husband but not to herself. Rafaat’s story is so provoking because, not only does the character have an affair that brings her joy, but her lover is a female snake. The story directly brings about many subjects that are taboo in the Egyptian society, and not only acknowledges that they exist, but asserts that they are acceptable. However, on a broader level, Rifaat argues on behalf of women’s equality in general. The snake that becomes the character’s lover is representative of these rights, and the attributes that Rifaat gives to the snake are the key to these issues. Most importantly, the snake is a divine being, signifying that women are endowed by the Creator with the rights that they are asking for. Also, the snake has an incredible power over the woman, as she says her â€Å"soul [is] intoxicated with a strange elation at the exciting beauty of the snake† (Rifaat 1135). The snake’s beauty and appeal persist throughout the story, and Rifaat compares it to â€Å"jewels† (Rifaat 1134). These positive images of the snake, and hence women’s rights, attempt to influence attitudes about the expectations of women in Egypt. Rifaat also connects the snake with Cleopatra, a woman known for her power in Egypt, which further supports the snake as a strong symbol of womenâ₠¬â„¢s rights. The description of the snake also serves to symbolize the troubles that women have faced in gaining their rights. She is described as having â€Å"bright, wary eyes† (Rifaat 1135), illustrating her tiredness from the fight she has encountered. She is also seen â€Å"curled round on [her]self† (Rifaat 1135), a sign of the endless cyclical battle that the women have faced in gaining their rights. The snake is portrayed as a seductive but unreal creature, which points to a disillusionment with the fight for rights, as does Rifaat’s reference to the snake as something of a â€Å"fairy tale† (Rifaat 1134). Rifaat also shows the reaction to the movement for women’s rights in many ways. When the main character first encounters the previous inhabitant of the home, the poor lady is seen by the men as desperate and a â€Å"mad woman† (Rifaat 1132), a reflection of men’s ideas towards women’s rights in the Middle East. The woman’s unwillingness to leave and her fight to cling to the beautiful snake is an illustration of the Egyptian women’s desperate condition. However, Rifaat acknowledges that the women themselves are also fearful of their new rights. When the character is introduced to the snake, she is overcome with â€Å"terror† (Rifaat 1135) the first several times that they meet. She even tells her husband of her fear of the snake, although she is intrigued by its company. However, the priest encourages the character to â€Å"talk to [the snake] with all politeness and friendliness† (Rifaat 1136)—a plea from Rifaat to accep t women as equals. Hossain’s â€Å"Sultana’s Dream† is a call not merely for women’s equality, but for the complete empowerment of women. She makes her bold statement in favor of women’s rights through the portrayal of perfection in an entirely matriarchal society. Her argument is more audacious and outrageous than Rifaat’s, but her circumstances are also very different. As opposed to Egypt where the desires and powers of women are simply suppressed, the women of India are shut away from society in zenanas and are required to cover their heads when they go out in public. Therefore, the more dire situation of the women in India requires Hossain to present her views more rashly than does Rifaat’s. Hossain’s primary method of advocating feminist ideals is through her bitter and derogatory depiction of men. In the short story, Sister Sarah does not deny the weakness of women, in fact she acknowledges it, but she regards it as irrelevant so long as the presence of men does not exist to threaten the women. In her reasoning for keeping the men locked in the mardana, she compares the males to â€Å"a wild animal [in] a market place† (Hossain 324) and even to â€Å"lunatics,† asserting that one would not lock up all of the sane people to protect them from the mad men but would lock up the insane people instead, which is exactly what the mardana system does when it shuts away the men of the city (Hossain 325). She states that with the men out of the main society, there are no more crimes and no more violence. Through these small pieces of reasoning, Hossain insinuates that men are the root of evil and fear. She points out the men’s lack of taste for horticu ltural beauty, their absence of patience, and their ability to â€Å"dawdle away their time in smoking† (Hossain 326). She illustrates that an entirely matriarchal society would be free of evil and would be even more productive than India’s currently patriarchal culture. The similarities between the stories of Rifaat and Hossain demonstrate the mixture of both disparity and hope in the movement towards women’s rights in the Middle East. Both are heavily dream-like and present a deep longing and wishing for equality. The artificiality of â€Å"Sultana’s Dream,† seen in the controlled weather, and the complete unreality of the djinn snake in â€Å"My World of the Unknown† give a slight feeling of lost hope toward the subject. While the dreams present a wistful anticipation, the falseness of the circumstances are disheartening. The secrecy employed in both stories, through Rifaat’s character’s secret affair and Hossain’s character’s secret dream, assists to imply the delicacy of the subject. Women’s rights are still very taboo in the Middle East, and both stories end unresolved with the open question of what is to happen next. I would like to believe that each individual reflects upon how they can become a better person the next day. In reality, I understand that not everyone thinks this way. And even those who do will not think like this every day. When examining one’s life decisions, it is important to reflect upon where one has come from and where one aims to go. In my own personal life, I aim to become a clinical social worker to aid in the relief of those who have suffered. More specifically, I would like to work in urgent care, hospitals, and hospice in order to help those with physical conditions understand the ramifications of their decisions and have as much peace among the chaos in their lives as possible. After much contemplation, I have decided that all my decisions were reflective. Although not all were rational, I considered my options with careful attention. As someone with clinical anxiety, I worry a lot about my future. I have come to realize that only if I decide to act upon my circumstances will the outcome change. A year later, an artist called Robert Naphthalene who was funded by the same body compounded the situation when he made images portraying sadomasochism, nude children, flowers and homosexuality. This prompted the senate to call for government action against vulgar art. However, the due process guaranteed by the fifth amendment of the constitution of the united States has suppressed most efforts put forward by NEE towards outlawing Obscenity and instilling decency in art. This is probably because the intentions of the artists work may easily be misinterpreted by people calling for actions. If the government or Other institutions such as universities among others allowed art work to be censored based on peoples feelings towards assumed moral or religious authority, discrimination against people based on their gender, race or sexual orientation, ear of taboos or controversial issues etc then no work of art would ever be created. Apparently the United States is a cosmopolitan country and different individuals will have different views upon an artists work and this makes it difficult to censor art work based on peoples attitudes. With its new advertisement of the Viper SRT-10, Dodge has clearly captured some of our societys view on money; do whatever it takes to get it. It pictures an old wealthy man and his beautiful, young bride with a brand new Dodge Viper sports car sitting in the background. In our days of Anna Nicole Smith and countless other gold digging Playboy bunnies, not to mention all of the not-so-famous people doing the same thing, this ad truly fits into our time and culture. In fact, if this ad was publ ished 30 years ago, the majority of the population would be shocked, maybe even outraged. However, seeing it today, most Americans, including myself, laugh at it because it is something we have become accustomed to. Dodge has done a great job in choosing their audience and knowing how to get their attention, by using a humorous and thought provoking picture, a well planned color scheme and a clever slogan. The primary audience for this ad is very wealthy, single males age 40 to 80 that are possibly going through a mid-life, or end-of-life, crisis and need something to make them feel young again. Who better to make an eighty-year-old man feel younger than his new, voluptuous, twenty-something wife? Not only does this ad target older men, it also brings in the younger upper class, as well. By having this very old man and very young, beautiful model pose as husband and wife, it gives the message to all men, that regardless of appearance, they can have a beautiful girlfriend as long as they have the money and a Dodge Viper. Dodge is definitely targeting the self-esteem of wealthy men. Men that, although wealthy, may not have everything they want in life. Theyve made their fortune but are lacking in joy. This ad is using another exploited emotion in this country, lust, to sell the Viper. It shows wealthy men that they can find joy in lusting after a younger woman and that the Viper and money will help them keep her. The men that Dodge targets with this ad, old or young, know how to use their money to get what they want. It is no mistake that the ad appeared in Automobile Magazine. This magazine frequently features high-end cars such as Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari and gets more of an upper class audience than its competition. The image is the attention-grabber in this advertisement. The first noticeable thing is a beautiful, young, blond-haired woman in a wedding dress that is doing all it can to hold in the silicone. Next to her, an elderly man between the ages of 75 and 90. He looks to be very wealthy due to his attire and surroundings. He is dressed in a nice tuxedo and has a proud, distinguished look on his face. If that isnt enough, he supports a gold, big-pimpin dollar-sign ring on his finger. Dodge has also made sure the audience can see the wedding rings on each o f their hands. This ensures that the audience doesnt mistake the gentleman for the womans father or more appropriate, grandfather. The woman, of course, has a huge diamond ring. This, again, signifies that the man is wealthy and she is not afraid to spend it. By the look of her smiling face, she is very happy. After all those years of searching for the perfect man, she finally found the pocketbook, I mean the man of her dreams. Dodge has truly captured the essence of greed with the image. The background of this ad also expresses wealth. With the large courtyard and beautiful white gate, the picture hints to the audience that the couple is standing inside an expensive country estate. Actually the gate also gives the impression that the bride and groom are gated off from the rest of the world. The only things they need are each other, the Viper and, of course, money. Not only does the background show wealth, but the color scheme helps to accent the car. The greenery and the white wall are very natural, peaceful colors, while the car is bright red. This was obviously done so that the car will catch the eye of the audience and stand out from the rest of the things in the picture. Red has always been the color used to describe the classic American sports car and it symbolizes a fun and exciting lifestyle. It says that this car will get you noticed. The type of men they are advertising to want to be noticed. They need to be noticed in every area of their life including the type of car they drive. That is why the words in this ad are few but effective. Certainly the picture speaks for itself, but the two phrases sum up what the audience wants to hear. Grab life by the horns is what Americans have been taught to do. The target audience has taken every opportunity to get where they are in life and they want to continue to get everything that is available to them. If they dont they may look like failures. They can finally be happy and they didnt need to have a relationship or be in love to get to that point. Or so they think. The same goes for the men that marry out of lust. The ad says it all. These men are seeking what the media has portrayed as the ultimate situation. Beautiful, model-like women, red sports cars, country estates are all the keys that unlock the doors to happiness.
